Infrastructure surcharge

Why is an infrastructure surcharge necessary?

Real-world experience in rail freight and intermodal logistics shows that only a stable infrastructure enables transport to be both efficient and environmentally friendly. The infrastructure surcharge is therefore not a simple price adjustment, but an investment in quality, reliability, and future viability. This long-term perspective supports resilient supply chains and measurable climate goals across complex, time-critical networks.

When public funding decreases, ongoing costs inevitably rise—such as for track access, terminal use, energy, and planning services. The infrastructure surcharge was introduced following a decision by the federal government to reduce financial support for track access charge subsidies. This surcharge is a direct response to the decreased public funding and is intended to close the resulting funding gap effectively, while safeguarding capacity during peaks. We are committed to keeping this surcharge as fair and transparent as possible to ensure that our customers continue to have access to high-quality transport services.
