Why is an infrastructure surcharge necessary?
The reality in rail freight transport and intermodal logistics shows: Only with a stable infrastructure can transport be organized efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner. The infrastructure surcharge therefore does not serve as a simple cost adjustment, but as an investment in quality, reliability and future viability.
When public funding decreases, ongoing expenses inevitably increase – for example, for track access, terminal usage, energy and planning services. The infrastructure surcharge was introduced due to a decision by the federal government to reduce financial resources for track access subsidies. This surcharge is a direct response to the reduced state subsidies and serves to effectively close the resulting funding gap. We strive to make this surcharge as fair and transparent as possible to ensure that our customers continue to have access to high-quality transport services.
